About the Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer (AWS-focused) at Incision, you will design, scale, and operate secure, reliable, and cost-efficient backend systems with a strong emphasis on AWS architecture and cloud-native best practices. You’ll work with Node.js and TypeScript, using Nest.js, AWS CDK, and core AWS services to build and evolve our serverless platform. You’ll collaborate closely with Product Owners, Data Engineer, and Frontend teams to deliver features end-to-end, while also acting as a technical authority on AWS design decisions, trade-offs, and operational excellence. You’ll play a key role in strengthening our cloud foundations, improving reliability, scalability, and cost control across environments. This is a great role for someone who enjoys owning AWS architecture, mentoring others, and building systems where security, performance, and trust truly matter.

Your role

  • Architect, build, and operate backend services on AWS serverless using TypeScript, Node.js, Nest.js, and AWS CDK

  • Take ownership of AWS architecture decisions, including service selection, scaling strategies, and cost optimization

  • Own features end-to-end: requirements, design docs, implementation, testing, observability, cost posture, and on-call readiness

  • Design resilient systems using AWS-native patterns (event-driven, async processing, retries, idempotency)

  • Work with DocumentDB (primary) and DynamoDB/Aurora, making informed data modeling and performance trade-offs

  • Design and document clear APIs with OpenAPI, ensuring scalability, security, and maintainability

  • Strengthen observability across services using CloudWatch, logs, metrics, and tracing

  • Ensure privacy, security, and compliance in handling healthcare data

  • Collaborate closely with Product, Data, Frontend, and QA teams to deliver high-quality outcomes

  • Mentor and support other engineers, raising AWS, backend, and operational standards across the team

Job requirements

What You Bring πŸ’ͺ

  • 7+ years of backend engineering experience, with strong hands-on AWS expertise in production environments

  • Deep understanding of AWS core services, such as Lambda, API Gateway, S3, CloudWatch, Step Functions, EventBridge, IAM, and networking fundamentals

  • Proven experience designing and operating serverless or cloud-native architectures at scale

  • Strong background with Infrastructure as Code (AWS CDK strongly preferred, Terraform acceptable)

  • Solid experience with Node.js, TypeScript, and Nest.js in production systems

  • Database expertise: DocumentDB (or MongoDB), plus DynamoDB or Aurora

  • Experience improving system reliability, performance, and scalability through effective debugging, execution optimization, and memory management

  • Strong observability, security, and CI/CD practices in AWS-based systems

  • Track record of mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction

  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex AWS concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Great To Bring Along

  • AWS certifications (e.g. AWS Solutions Architect – Associate or Professional)

  • DevOps or platform experience (CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies, environment management)

  • Experience with cost optimization and FinOps practices in AWS

  • Event-driven architectures (outbox pattern, idempotency, async messaging)

  • Exposure to AI/LLM integrations and AWS-based AI services

  • Frontend experience, especially Angular

  • Background in healthcare, finance, or other regulated environments
